Shelby Carl
McPherson.

This work is dedicated to my father — Shelby Carl McPherson. He is the reason I carry this name, and the reason I show up every day with purpose.

His life shaped mine in ways I am still discovering. Every client I serve, every conversation I have, every policy I help someone understand — I do it in his honor.

Dad, this one's for you.

Wisdom You Can
Trust.

Mine started when I was eight years old, riding alongside my grandmother, Ruth Ann Foster, to visit my great aunts — in their homes and in nursing facilities. The visits weren't reserved for holidays or special occasions. We showed up every weekend, and many times in the middle of the week without notice.

My grandmother believed that being present mattered. She was making sure the staff in the nursing facilities knew someone was paying attention — and more importantly, she wanted our family members to know that we cared. They were loved, valued, and never forgotten. My grandmother was a caregiver and my blueprint.

I didn't realize it then, but those rides and visits were shaping me into who I would become.

Years later, when my uncle suffered a massive brain bleed and fell into a coma — while my mom and grandmother were visiting family in Detroit — I stepped into the role of caregiver. For five years, I visited him, advocated for him, and cared for him at medical facilities in Columbus, Ohio until he passed away in August 2001. The following years brought profound loss. My mom passed away unexpectedly in August 2002. Then, in August 2003, I lost my grandmother — ironically on the exact same day that I lost my mom.

These experiences transformed me. I learned that caregiving is more than providing support. Caregiving is a transformative act of love, presence, and commitment. It means you show up when it's difficult, you stay when everyone else leaves, and you make sure people feel seen and valued during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

My grandmother taught me that lesson as a child, and every chapter of my life since has reinforced it.

I will always advocate, I will always care, and I will always show up.
